The Four Royalty Streams of a Composition
Every composition has exactly four ways to earn: mechanical royalties (reproduction), performance royalties (public performance), synchronization fees (pairing with visuals — Module 6), and print (sheet music/lyrics — small but real). Different uses trigger different combinations, which is why one song generates five different checks.

Mechanical Royalties: The Statutory Rate
Mechanicals are the oldest royalty in recorded music — named for the 'mechanical' reproduction of songs on player-piano rolls. In the U.S. the rate is set by law (the Copyright Royalty Board), not negotiation. After being frozen at 9.1¢ from 2006–2022, the rate now rises with inflation annually under Phonorecords IV: 13.1¢ per physical/download copy in 2026 — the highest in history.
Worked example: the vinyl pressing
A label presses 10,000 vinyl copies of an album containing your song (you own 100% of it, runtime 3:47).
Statutory rate (2026): 13.1¢ per copy per song → 10,000 × $0.131 = $1,310 owed to you in mechanicals.
The label needs a mechanical license — through the compulsory process, HFA, or directly from you. Direct licenses sometimes ask for a rate below statutory ('controlled composition' style discounts): you can say no.
Song over 5 minutes? The rate becomes 2.52¢ × runtime in minutes: a 7-minute epic = 17.64¢ per copy.
